Not surprising, it is thought by many to be the most powerful and important action you may take, in achieving success in your lifetime.

Goal setting can be described as the practice of first visualizing your ideal future, then creating a 'list' from those thoughts, while planning out everything you need to do along the way so you can attain them.

By focusing on your goals and a set of clear defined objectives, you will create a momentum that continually brings about progress, and accomplishment.

So let's get to it...how to set goals...and achieve them!

Before we start the process of setting your personal goals, stop and think for a few minutes about your current situation and where you are in your life. Think about and decide what areas of your life you would like to improve upon or change, as wells as the things you wish to accomplish.

Here are a few examples of some questions you should ask yourself, that will really get your mind going.

  • What do you need to change to improve yourself?

  • What challenges do you want to take, that would be the most rewarding upon completion?

  • What do you wish yo acquire?

  • What's your dream job?

  • Do you want to work from home?

  • Do you want to spend more quality time with your family?

Now that you have given yourself a few minutes to brainstorm, begin to put your thoughts on paper. Challenge yourself, get creative and come up with the life you would really love to have. These do not have to be written out perfectly. Just get your pen going and empty out all the thoughts that are bouncing around your head. Put them all onto paper...this step is important!

Please do not skip the previous step, it is probably the most important of all. If you don't compete it, odds are details will be lost or forgotten as time moves on. The idea of putting everything down on paper is much more powerful in terms of effectiveness, and has been proven to work better.

Let's get back to where we left off,
how to set goals...the right way!

Hopefully at this point you have a page or so, full of great, challenging goals, which we will help you transform into attainable goals. Before we get to that, take a moment to separate and organize all of them into workable groups, keeping related issues somewhat together, so you can focus on them more effectively.

Now that you have a clear visual outline of what you want to accomplish, you will find it much easier to set up action steps with due date's so you can track your progress and continually move forward.

How to set goals with action steps?

For each goal you have, create an action list of the tasks and steps that need to be completed in order for your goal to be attained. By breaking each goal down into many parts, you will find it to be much easier to make consistent progress. Now that you have created your action list, all you have left is to set a due date for each action. By doing so you will push yourself towards completing each one in a timely manner.

Achieving goals...how to set goals...let's do a quick example:

Goal - I will transform the way I look and feel by working out four times a week for the next 12 weeks. During this time I will lose 25 pounds and be able to fit in my favorite suit from 7 years ago. I will feel healthier, leaner and more energetic.

    Due Date 6/30/2008

Action 1 - Clean out the cabinets of all unhealthy foods

    Due Date - 3/22/2008

    Action 2 - Purchase a book of workouts / hire a trainer.

    Due Date - 3/24/2008

Action 3 - Find a local gym I can join / or pick up a set of adjustable dumbells.

    Due Date - 3/26/2008

Action 4 Create a daily / weekly log that I can enter my results into, review and follow as an outline guiding me to my goal.

    Due Date - 3/26/2008

This is just a sample to provide you with the framework, which you can tweak and modify as you choose. The point here is, by creating the action steps, it simplifies the overall goal, clearly showing your next step. It makes what could seem like a hefty and overwhelming goal, much more attainable.

Some of your goals may take more action steps than others and that is fine. The key is to break them down into small enough tasks that are doable. Always set a due date, maintain and follow your schedule, and you will be surprised at how much more you can accomplish, often in less time than you would expect.
